Friends of the Lexington Fisher House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Lexington VA Fisher House, which provides free lodging to military and veteran families while their loved ones receive medical care at the VA. Our mission is rooted in service, compassion, and responsible stewardship in support of those who have served our nation.

Position Summary

Friends of the Lexington Fisher House is seeking a mission-driven, experienced Executive Director to serve as the organization’s chief management leader. This part-time, independent contractor position provides strategic, operational, and fundraising leadership while working closely with the Board of Directors to advance the organization’s mission in support of military and veteran families.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and serves as a non-voting member of the Board and all standing committees.

A key component of this role includes leadership of the organization’s signature annual fundraising event, the VA 5K, serving as Race Director and overseeing all related planning, fundraising, and organizational activities.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with the Board of Directors to develop, implement, and evaluate strategic plans that advance the organization’s mission.
  • Ensure organizational programs and services remain relevant, effective, and sustainable in support of military and veteran families.

Organizational Management

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization.
  • Coordinate and support Board committees and organizational volunteers.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-focused organizational culture that encourages collaboration and professionalism.

Financial Management & Fundraising

  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Board.
  • Monitor expenditures and ensure compliance with approved budget guidelines.
  • Identify, pursue, and oversee fundraising initiatives and donor development efforts.
  • Support donor stewardship efforts, including timely acknowledgment of contributions.

Signature Event Leadership – VA 5K

  • Serve as Race Director for the annual VA 5K, the organization’s signature fundraising event.
  • Lead all aspects of event planning, coordination, and execution, including timelines, volunteers, vendors, sponsors, and logistics.
  • Oversee fundraising strategy and sponsor engagement related to the VA 5K.
  • Collaborate with Board members, volunteers, community partners, and the Lexington VA to ensure a successful and mission-aligned event.
  • Evaluate event outcomes and provide post-event reporting to the Board of Directors.

Community Engagement & Public Relations

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, community partners, veterans’ organizations, VA representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent Friends of the Lexington Fisher House at community events, meetings, and public forums.
  • Serve as a visible, credible ambassador for the organization and its mission.

Board Relations & Governance

  • Support effective governance through timely and transparent communication with the Board of Directors.
  • Implement Board-approved policies, resolutions, and initiatives.

Key Deliverables

  • Preparation and presentation of an annual operational plan and budget for Board approval.
  • Regular written and verbal reports to the Board on financial status, fundraising progress, program outcomes, and organizational performance.
  • Maintenance of inventory control for organizational assets and expendable items.
  • Service as the primary point of contact for organizational voicemail, email correspondence, and USPS mail.
  • Timely preparation and distribution of donor acknowledgment letters, including tax-exempt contribution letters.
  • Assurance of compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience as an Executive Director or in a senior leadership role within a nonprofit organization, or equivalent management experience.
  • Experience planning and managing fundraising events strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational, operational, and financial management skills, including budget development and reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with donors, volunteers, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Friends of the Lexington Fisher House.

Work Structure & Compensation

  • Classification: Independent Contractor (1099)
  • Compensation: $2,500 per month, payable on the 15th of each month
  • Hours: Flexible; occasional evenings and weekends required (particularly around events)
  • Benefits: None
  • Term: Ongoing; either party may terminate with thirty (30) days’ written notice

Performance Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated semi-annually by the Board of Directors based on mutually agreed-upon goals, performance metrics, and organizational outcomes.
